The Growth of Joy--Phase Three

In December of 2007 a new Steering Committee was selected for Joy Lutheran Church’s expansion project “The Growth of Joy.” In January 2008, the Steering Committee was given a charter by the church council to “steer” the third phase of the church’s master site development that was begun in 2001. The portions of the master site plan that are yet to be completed are the remodeling and upgrading of the downstairs Sunday School area and the upstairs administration area. In addition, the Steering Committee was given the responsibility of making recommendations to the church council for the management of the church’s mortgage. Currently, the committee is researching the feasibility and priority for the pending remodeling projects and preparing for the next three year capital pledge campaign that is scheduled for the spring of 2009. Committee members are Gary Block, Steven Budnack, Lori Stucky, Jean Williams, and Pastor Lyn.

Growth of Joy Master Plan

  1. Lower Level Remodel
    • Sunday school classrooms: Remodel classrooms and hallways in accordance with (IAW) June 6, 2006 concept design, Eidos Architects.
    • Restroom upgrade: Remodel youth center restrooms and hallway. Add handicap/family restroom. Move youth center entry door to best facilitate access to the restrooms from the lower entry hallway (IAW concept design).
    • Lower entry airlock: Construct inner door and window sidelights at lower entry to best facilitate heating and cooling cost savings in the basement.
    • Remodel Youth Center: As part of the original Master Plan, the Youth Center (old Pre-school) was to be updated/remodeled to better support Sunday school classroom spaces and increased youth activities. The space in its present form later proved to be adequate for the “need” and was, as a cost saving measure, removed from the Master Plan. Given the Strategic Plan, the expansion of the Youth Minister’s office space, replacement of flooring and additional office space to accommodate expansion of the Whole Family Ministry warrants a review of remodeling.
    • Youth Center door (at playground) upgrade: Doors and frames replaced with more energy efficient double pain glass and new weather stripping.
    • HVAC upgrades: Add air conditioning components to three furnace units to cool Sunday school classrooms. Replace all seven furnace units with new efficient furnace/air conditioning units.

  2. Administration area remodel
    • Office space additions and upgrades: Remodel oldest portion of the church. Add more office spaces to support Senior Pastor’s Strategic Plan for increased staffing (IAW concept design). Upgrade Reception area and work room space.
    • Two adult education classrooms: Add two adult education classrooms (IAW concept design) equipped with multimedia capabilities and church library.

  3. Elevator (narthex to lower entry hallway): Primary purpose is to move handicap personnel and freight items.

  4. Roof redesign on original building: Construct pyramid shaped roof over original 1974 structure to aesthetically conform to Phase I designs and replace oldest section to flat roof.

  5. Cross and bell tower: Accent structure at main entrance with electronic chimes and bells.

  6. Mortgage (debt) reduction: Use the Capital Campaign Program to raise additional funds to pay-down the principle on the church mortgage over a short time period (three years) to lower monthly payments.
